Re: [MarcosManiacs] Gullwings and Fastbacks

2003-06-16 by Christian Fey

Hello Maarten,

I don´t have details for the two cars you requested, but here in Germany Klaus Twedell is owner of a green "Gullwing". The car is top condition and he is driving the car for "hill climbing" races.

As far as I know he owns three (perhaps five) "Fastbacks". Two of these Fastbacks are regulary on the track. One of the cars is lightblue and the other car is grenn/gold. The third one should be red/white and was earlier driven in the Netherlands.

A very rare and nearly unknown Marcos is the "Tavenor". This car is also based on a "Fastback" but the driver Mr. Tavenor changed the car several times. When I saw the car first time on the nürburgring in 60´s the car was open like a "Spyder" in later time the car was rebuild to a "coupe". The rear axle was changed from live axle to independant and so. This car was absolutely fascinating and rather successful. The most unusual detail on this car is the fact, that the "roll-over" is like the chassis wooden.

You will find some pictures of Twedell cars under yahoo "pictures". Klaus Twedell has a lot of old race photos of the car - mainly Nürburgring - and knows a lot of the early cars.

If you need informations concerning the "pre marcos" time - the cars were named "Speedex" you can get them under:

section: "cars"

Christian

Dear All,

As a Marcos enthusiast (for the last six years), I have been researching the
history of the early Marcosses, and the Marcos Fastbacks in particular, for
the last 2 years or so. I was wondering whether any of you, knows whether
there still are some early Marcosses (pre-1800) around. I was told the John
Sutton Gullwing once resided in the States and I understood the late Dave
McCubbin was restoring a Luton Gullwing. Can anybody confirm where both cars
are? A few cars went to Japan, at least one is thought to be in Australia
and France and Italy could holdl a couple more. Is there anybody who knows
where they have gone? Should you have any further information regarding any
Gullwing or Fastback (no matter where they ended up), I would love to hear
from you. Also material from the 1960s, pictures, stories, names and
addresses are all welcome, maybe we can in the end fit all the pieces of the
puzzle together in the end.

By the way, the programme of the 6th Marcos Euregio Meeting is about to be
finalised, and I will send an invitation to the group soon.

Kindest regards

Maarten Krikken
