RE: [MarcosManiacs] 1600 GT rear suspension chassis - 5201

2013-07-14 by Steinpom

Hello Peter,

Great to get such a quick response. My problem is that I took the car apart
(it was complete when I got it) about 25 at least years ago.. like most
people I did not anticipate so many years to pass before getting back to the
project. I foolishly did not take many photos as it was coming apart. Then
a young friend of my kids decided to do me a favour and tidy up the various
piles of car parts I had in the basement and garage. What he did not
realize was that parts were in various locations because they belonged to
various cars I have. Hard to get mad at someone who's trying to do a favour
but.. Anyhow, time and the mixing up of parts has not made the restoration
any easier. I'm told that there never was an official factory build manual
for this model, but I'm hoping someone has a lead on something. I have a
number of TORQUE club magazines which have some info, but maybe one I don't
have would be more to the point. Enough ranting for tonight. Copies of any
pictures you might still have of the 1600 mechanicals or suspension would be
nice.

Hi Danny

No idea if this reaches you, but here we go. I owned a 67 wooden chassis and
regret for ever selling it.

around 40 years after, I have now imported a steel chassis 3.9ltr around 80
model from GB. And it exhibits all the flaws I always knew about. Heavy as,
with an engine that has not zip (albeit 3.9 ltr) and a feel like driving a
tank. The wooden chasis GT1600 I owned was nimble as.

But as to details? I am now amazed at how little information is available
about any of these cars. And I mean in detail: what is the rear axle, the
front suspension, and so on. My earlier GT1600 had a Ford rear axle (a Ford
1660 engine and gear box and GT6, Herald or Spitfire front end stuff.

chers

Peter

After about 25 years of being apart I'm about to try and gather up all the
parts and do a loose reassembly of the car to see if I still have all the
pieces. The car will then be taken apart again to finish the body
restoration and get painted. The immediate need is for some detailed photos
and/or diagrams of the rear suspension and associated brackets etc etc for a
wood hulled 1600 GT. Any other manuals or instructions would be most
appreciated. The only build manual I can find on the internet is for the
later tube frame chassis. Were there significant changes to the suspension
when the GT went from wood chassis to metal tube?

Thanks for the tips, advise and wisdom.

Danny
