Re: Removing body from steel chassis

2018-08-09 by hide809rig169@...

Up date on chassis removal;
Thank you for all the information and advice. Was able to move body off chassis about an inch, stopped, concerned that without helpers I could go too far and do damage to body. I used a thin piece of sheet metal and drove it between chassis and body. Tight fit between chassis and body, surprisingly, body sits on all tubes as it should. There is rust on the chassis, this has not helped. Appears at one time, undercoat was applied to bottom, this was also acting as an adhesive. The serious problem was between parcel shelf and chassis tubes it sits/screws to. On the left side parcel shelf, when removing the screws, I broke the heads off, the threaded screw threads were still flush with parcel fiberglass. I did not think this would matter since the heads were off, it did. More, under the parcel shelf was some type of adhesive or chassis sponge that would not let the left and right sides of the body move. I used a gasket scrapper, scrapped and hammered the substance out. I had the body supported by the seat pans with a floor jack providing upward pressure, as per Larry Meadow's suggestions. The more I scrapped between the body and chassis the more the body moved upwards. All the screws and bolts were out, problem was; three broken sheet metal screws and what ever Marcos used between the chassis and body was holding body to chassis. Minor prying between the chassis and parcel shelf allowed the body to move through the sheet metal screw threads. I think the body is now free. The fit between the chassis and body is press fit tight.
Now to convince friends to come by and take body off the chassis. I have a two post lift, I am considering using two lift arms to help lift the body. Larry Meadows tells me to install something under the body, between the parcel shelf and seat backs to raise back of body. Hopefully I will get a picture of that device, Thanks Larry for that. The back part of body is fragile, want to move, could be an issue.
Once again thank you for all the information. When I get the body off, will post.
