Lots more questions

Lots more questions

2002-07-10 by a5h_pm

Hi again guys, time for some more (yawn...) questions!

1) do you guys have metal strips holding the carpets down along the
sills?

2) does you boot lock, lock? (the new locks I have seem to rely on a
striker plate turning 90degrees away from the push part of the lock,
which works for the doors but not the boot!

3) Does your car have an anti roll bar at the front - this question
for those with the metal framed Ford V6 in particular?

4) any advice on an exhaust system? are there tubular manifolds
available?

5) Any need/availability of a sumjo guard (don't all answer this at
once! - I've seen past comments about ground clearance!)

6) Have you got a Amp meter or volt meter in your car? I've just
replaced the wiring loom and the new loom did not have wiring for my
amp meter since it is now wired for a alternator which should be
better for the power! this means I can either leave it in the dash
not functioning or fit a volt meter (battery condition). I guess if
you guys are still running original looms then you've probably still
got amp meters!

ok that should do for now - if you've not gathered I've got the week
off to work on the car! so far the wiring is all in, and the trim is
two rear panels off being completed! it looks like a car again! I
sat in it for the first time in 6 years and am wondering now how I
can press the pedals!!!

cheers guys

Hi Ashley,

Answers are:

1.	Yes, along the outer edge.

2.	Yes.

3.	No.

4.	Don't know for V6.

5.	I have a home made one welded to the sump itself.

6.	I have the voltmeter on my car, which was standard for the Volvo 3
litre.

Re: [MarcosManiacs] Lots more questions

Ashley,
I have the V6 with:
1. no anti-roll bar in the front (doesn't need it for my driving)
2. Check the build manuals for the plate that is needed for the boot lock
3. Rory sells tubular exhaust manifolds but I believe you have to cut the footwells to install it. The cast iron ones (original) are just swapped from side to side so they face forward.
4. I put an alternator in mine instead of the original generator and it works fine with the amp gauge
5. I just purchased AVO shocks which are height-adjustable but I do have a sump plate that is welded on.
I can take pics of the boot lock set-up and email them if you want.

Re: Lots more questions

2002-07-10 by a5h_pm

Hi Don/Paul et al

Thanks for replying,

I would appreciate a picture of the boot lock as I am confused a
little by mie new one, the old lock (which I never had the key for)
was always in the unlocked position so I never really thought about
how it worked - the back of it however was just left unmodified with
just a bolt head screwed in the back, so I can only assume that the
action of turning the key stop the button being pressed at all. the
new one when the key is inserted and turned merly rotates the hole
mechanism (also just a screw currently), and can still be pressed
when locked. Now I am guessing that from what you have said that it
should have a plate on the back of it which pressumably either jams
when turned or missed the striker release in some way so as not to
open the boot? - a picture would be much appreciated thanks Don.

My next task is to get the doors back on and the locking mechanisms
installed and working the locks are already in the doors - I am sure
everyone remembers the can of worms I opened with that one a while
back!

It is atually quite a scary thought that other than sorting out the
engine and gear box (which touch wood should be straight forward), I
might even have the car on the road this year and make use of the
insurance I've paid for!

Another question - this time a little easier, I've read through the
many manuals I now have (and Jeff has the PDF's ready for his fab
site), and discovered that my read axle is not correctly adjusted
(it is not equidistant from each side of the chassis rails). Would
it make sense that this would explain why I can not get the new
handbrake cable fitted?

Interestingly I was chatting to one of my neighbours about what I
was up to and when I told him I was rebuilding a Marcos he got very
excited saying that he used to own one - I wonder if it was anyones
here, I will try and get more info out of him, all that he said
which confused me was it was a wooden chassis Ford Straight six?, I
questioned him whether he meant Triumph of Volvo but he was quite
adament it was Ford, he even rebuilt and hand painted the engine
before putting it back in the car, only to discover that all his
hard work was hidden below the chassis! - Was the Volvo engine
shared with Ford by chance?

Any way enough of my ramblings, I will no doubt be back with more
questions soon as my rebuild progresses!

Cheers

Ashley

Yes.

Yes. I'll check the layout later.

No - some do, but mine doesn't. The fittings are there on the
suspension arms, but not on the chassis.

Give me a week and I'll tell you. I've got the original manifolds
still, but tubular ones are available (for a price) from Rory. I've
just ordered a stainless system, to replace the rusted factory
exhaust system on my car (not Stainless, of course). I spoke to
Heritage about stainless steel, but even keeping my standard
manifolds, it was going to cost in excess of £750 from them...

People told me that stainless was a waste of money when I acquired my
car (in 1989). The quote was "It'll fail off long before it rusts" -
well, 10 years later, it rusted through and it NEVER fell off, so I'm
going stainless this time - for less than the cost of replacing the
mild steel. I have to say, however, that the Maniflow system (they
made/make them for Marcos) was very good in terms of lifespan (years,
anyway, probably only did about 6K miles in 10 years, but that, in
itself isn't good for exhausts) and sound - I used to love going into
tunnels :^)

Sump guard I guess. Good idea, but practical?

Yep, Amp meter and original dynamo.

Re: Lots more questions

2002-07-11 by mark_saxby

There was never a factory built straight six ford. I guess it's
possible someone fitted an old Zephyr straight six to one at some
point.

I know of a BMW straight six, Alfa V6 and have heard of a Jaguar V12,
so it's not impossible.

Having said that, I don't know if a STRAIGHT six would fit in a
wooden chassis. The Volvo/Triumph were only available in the steel
cars.

Cheers,

Mark
