steering rack

Hello all
   Long time since I last posted........changed jobs,seperated from 
wife....blah,blah,blah......anyway I noticed today as I was fitting 
the steering wheel to the column that the body of the steering rack
is rotating on the tubes that hold the steering rods is this normal

Hi Dave,

Could you be more specific with your description. Are you referring to the
rose joints, the bushings supporting the steering shaft? If so, the usual
problem is that the shaft rotates within the bushing, wearing the shaft.
Ideally, the shaft should remain fixed with the bush doing the rotating.
It's a common problem for the bush to get dry and stop rotating. Usually by
the time you realise it, no amount of oil will persuade the bush to resume
it's job. The solution is to replace the rose joints and sometimes the shaft
as well if it's too worn.

Hi Paul
  I have replaced the rose joints, that is not the problem............I am
talking about the steering rack itself.......think of the rack as rear axle
with the centre section and the axle tubes.........the centre section that
houses the ring and pinion for the steering
rack is rotating on the tube that houses the 2 rods that bolt up to the
steering knuckle........I hope that is better explained
