There are two good reasons I can think of to prepare a car to FIA
specifications regardless of whether it is competing in the USA or not:
1. The FIA spec tends to be conservative and advocates for
period-correctness over performance. Many folks think the FIA goes
overboard in this respect, but the advantage is that a Marcos 1800 GT built
to FIA spec will likely meet (undershoot, in some cases) the organizer's
technical requirements for acceptability. Bottom line: you will likely be
welcome at more events globally.
2. The FIA paperwork probably makes your car worth more because it is a
sales plus when the car is sold if offered to non-USA buyers. Good for the
Seller but this aspect is a minus from my point of view for our overall
historic racing sport.
Garry is absolutely correct to point out that it all depends upon where and
with whom you plan to race your car. The most important thing to do, as he
says, is to decide which race sanctioning group(s) you plan to compete and
then ensure you meet their technical preparation and safety requirements.
Strongly recommend you contact David Methely (Methley? Metheley?) in the
UK... he has prepared the best FIA-spec Marcos 1800 cars to my knowledge.
Dave has probably forgotten more about building a fast Marcos 1800 than most
acclaimed experts know. It's been years since I raced over there but I'd
bet he's still around.
Also, if you DO decide to attain FIA papers, please understand that the
historic paperwork and documents have just changed in the past 2 months for
the 2005 season. There is an excellent write-up on the new 2005 FIA
requirements in Victory Lane magazine this month by Alan Putt. Take a look.
Believe me, having raced against Marcos 1800 cars like Metheley, Sewell,
Tice, etc. in FIA and HSCC (UK) events)... a Marcos 1800 built to the limits
/ capability legally allowed under FIA specs is a VERY fast car indeed, and
can run at the front against Lotus 26R Elans and TVRs, etc. To get it to
that point requires lightweight bodywork, rear inboard discs, comp. gearbox,
highly tuned engine, etc. How fast ($$$) do you want to go?
Best Regards,
Andy Seward
1966 Mini Marcos, soon-to-be-applying for the new FIA paperwork myself!
