New Marcos in Canada

New Marcos in Canada

2005-04-26 by Don Lattimer

Hi all,

Tony Stelliga just emailed me regarding an upcoming story about Marcos for a
Canadian newspaper (don't know which one). He requested the email address
of the Marcos Canada Club owner (?). I've found on the Mini Marcos links a
listing for a David Scott in Alberta, Canada. Anyone have any knowledge of
this person or how I may contact him?

Thanks,

Don

Hi Don,

Generally, the Marcos coupes and Mini Marcoses are supported by separate
groups. The cars are completely different animals so if the article is about
the coupe rather than the Mini, it would probably be more appropriate if he
was be provided with either my address (pauldransfield@...) or Ron
McLeod's (Ronald.McLeod@...), who is the Canadian representative
of the UK based Marcos Owners Club. Personally I've never heard of David
Scott.

Paul,
I believe the article will be about the TSO and Marcos interest in North America. I gave Tony Ron's contact info and will pass yours along also. Thanks.

Paul, your observation is quite correct but not really pertinent. The
MMOC web site has a contacts page on which the other Marcos clubs are
listed. In some countries the national clubs may well embrace both Minis
and Coupés. I am not aware of other Mini Marcos clubs apart from our
associated group in Japan, though of course owners do tend to belong to
local Mini clubs as well.

I can't remember where the Canadian address came from, or the US one
for that matter, but probably from other Marcos sites. If they're no
longer valid I'll take them off. If you have any updates please let me
know.

Richard,
I was just on your site and the latest guestbook entry is from a Mr. Scott from Canada! Maybe we should contact him. There are few Mini Marcos in North America but all Marcos owners are welcome on the Yahoo message board.

Yes - he's a Mr. R. Scott who runs a poster site so I doubt if there's
any connection or he might have mentioned it.

Hi Richard,

The distinction I was alluding to was that even if both groups belong to the
same 'club' (notice I said groups), it would not be appropriate for members
of one to represent the other. I've been a member of the Marcos Owners Club
for 30 years, long before they embraced Mini Marcos members, but I would
never presume to speak on behalf of the Mini Marcos, just as I would hope
Mini Marcos owners would not presume to speak on behalf of the coupe owners.
The only active Marcos affiliations I'm aware of in North America are the
Marcos Maniacs and the British based Marcos Owners Club.

The Marcos Owners Club did for a while have a Mini Marcos section. This
then split off as an independant club for a number of reasons, not
least because the requirements of the two sets of owners are rather
different. Minis and big Marcoses are somewhat different in character
and cost, but have a lot in common. Even though there might be the odd
bit of friction here and there we get on well together at the local
level. We have an active Thames Valley Marcos group which meets once a
month and attracts members of MOC, CMI and MMOC. I'll be going along to
the Brighton Classic Car Show in June courtesy of the South-East group
of MOC.

On the other hand we tend not to get invited to national rallies
because the coupé owners don't like getting thrashed by Mini Marcoses
around twisty sprint circuits such as Curborough ;-)

Heck, I'd be happy just to have a continental meet on this side of the pond. Unfortunately this is a big place and getting folks to travel any distance is difficult. So enjoy your get-togethers over there and remember us less fortunates. We're all one big family!
