Rebuild Progress Report

Rebuild Progress Report

2005-04-26 by Ash

Evening all, (well for those in the UK at least).

I thought I'd drop a quick note to say that I have at last found
myself a suitable firve speed box to drop into my car, so at last the
restoration continues! I have found a type 9 box from a 2.8 capri,
which has the better ratio's than a standard type 9 from a Sierra etc.
all that needs to be done is the input shaft needs shortening by 14.
8mm. I need also to get a new clutch plate still 8 1/2" but with
23splines. The gearlever needs bending to fit, and I've a second hand
prop and mounting plate with which to complete the picture! I've been
out in the garage for a good few nights now, and have really got the
bug! the doors have all there locks fitted again, the window frames
are nearly in, I need a new nylon bobbin for the right hand electric
window to get the glass operating with the motor. My delivery of trim
bits should appear soon from Rimmer brothers to complete the door
trim. As you can see I've got the bug again!!!

Still to do (other than getting the engine in):

Stretch and attach the handbrake cable.
New front brake disks (Vittese/GT6?)
New steering column bush.
Remove play from steering rack (new bushes and redo brackets).
Front headlight allignment.
Front/rear glass and finishing rubber trim.

....... etc but all in all not a lot really!!!

Ash,
Did you end up using the bellhousing from the V4?? If not, what did you use?

Hi Don,

Yep the bell housing from the V4 is necessary for the conversion, I'm
lucky enough to have one, there are a few available second hand (I
have some places if any one is interested), or you can by a new one
(in alloy so although expensive, slightly lighter). The only
consideration I had was that the orginal Cologne engine (from which I
have used the gearbox), would have had a 241mm clutch plate and
suitably size cover and flywheel, I am using the small 214mm plate
which fits inside the bell housing with out need for modifications to
starter etc. The Essex engine really benefits from any weight saving
on the fly wheel any way so I've been advised that this was a
improvement any way!

Also using this bellhousing I can stick with the hydraulic clutch
arrangement.

Re: Rebuild Progress Report

Hi again Don et al,

Factually my statement below was correct, eg you need the bellhousing
from a v4 to join the Type 9 to and essex, however as I have now
discovered the bellhousing/gearbox I have is not the right one! I
actually need the bellhousing from a Type E gearbox.

Any one who has the type 9 5 speed box fitted, can you tell me which
bellhousing you have used, and do you have hydraulic or cable clutch?

thanks

Ashley
