Excess heat!

Excess heat!

2005-08-03 by pwstevens11

In taking out my car (1971 Volvo - 3L (#3V5808 )for a few runs this
summer, I'm getting alot of heat coming from the bottom of the car.
The most significant area is about 1 ft behind the gear stick. Only
thoughts I have is that it needs extra insulation (heat shield!). Is
this road heat! exhaust! - checked gear box ?? Any thoughts!

Checked your transmission fluid? Could be overheating. Do you have a manual or automatic?

check to be sure that the tunnel cover is sealed well,
my car needed extra insulation betwen the cover and
the wood uprights. My passenger complained about
getting cooked from the heat coming through the gap in
the trans tunnel cover.

Don,

Have checked the transmission ( car's a manual shift! ) - my only
thoughts is insulation and / or exhaust heat. I have a ashtray mounted
on the tunnel and this get hot! There is definitey some insulation,
obviously not enough.

My 70 3L also get very warm along the tunnel. I agree there isn"t much insulation.

Come to think of it, I can almost light a cigar on the ashtray, but the rest stays cool because of the amount of padding I have.

Hello
The hot tip! I have been told about concerning just this problem, is
to travel to a industrial welding shop and buy a welding blanket used to
shield sparks and heat. It is made from fireproof woven cloth that can
be cut up with scissors.-Then glue this to the underside of the tunnel.
If this get wet, it does completely dry out and does not get saturated.
It may eventually get soiled, depending on the amount of oil blow your
car produces.

Also you could wrap the exhaust system with header wrap tape performing
the same measure-Remember to paint the pipes before covering.

I think we are all fighting the inherent airflow going under the car
gathering heat and then being forced into a narrowing transmission tunnel.

Good Day!
