Marcos on Ebay

Marcos on Ebay

2005-08-14 by Don Lattimer

Well guys, this is an odd one. I went to look at it today and found the
following:

He has paper work stating it is a 1967 #5081. Paperwork is from UK and
lists last owner as Martin Paul.

All the Mantula bodywork was done by the owner 20 years ago in UK. He
modeled it after a Mantula. It is a good job!

Dashboard has air vents on each end?

Front window is just sitting on the car. Not installed.

Back window is missing.

Windows, tailights and other parts are in the boot.

Leather/vinyl interior looks to be in good shape.

Engine is professionally installed. We did not start it.

He has only driven the car once. Home from where he bought it. He then
commenced working on it and has a bunch of pictures showing his progress
with the fiberglass mods.

When I was there this AM 133 peole were watching the auction on-line. The
current high bidder is from Italy and wants it pretty bad. Also a buyer
from NY is very interested.

In my opinion it would be quite a bit of work to get it back in top
condition.

The steel frame, the serial #5081, the strange engine, etc. has me baffled.
Maybe someone before the current owner made some mods also. I don't know if
a body can be taken off a wood frame car and then placed on a steel frame??

Anyways, he would like around $10k USD so take it from there. He will email
me with the outcome of the auction.

Don,
The air vents may be for air conditioning. My car came with a/c but don't know where it was installed. The car was imported by a doctor Phollis in Miami and he might of had it installed there. It was a Professional instalation, quite neatly done.

Larry,

the vents in dashboard on each side were "Standard" in the Mantula´s. My Mantula was the first factory build with air condition and has for the air condition additional vents in the footroom on each side.

If the owner really did all the fiberglass work to change a GT to a Mantula it was quite a lot of work. The rear mudguards coud be ordered in the factory at this time and I know that several persons made moulds for the frontspoiler, a friend of mine has such a mould, came with the GT we bought this year in UK, so it is possible. It is as well possible to dismantle the fiberglas body from the wooden chassis and I know 2 Marcos rebuild with a stell chassis. So it should go, but if it is worth the money ??

Hi everyone,
    Here is my 50 cents.
It is absolutely NOT a 67 and is therefore NOT #5081. There is no way
the wood chassis body can be modified to fit a steel frame car. the first
steel frame cars were made in 69 as everyone probably knows. The original
#5081 was a RHD 1600 Ford sold to a guy in Scotland. It has not been seen
for a number of years so it may have been scrapped. This is not to say that
this is a bad car or that it is a bad buy. I personally don't care about
correct numbers but a buyer might.

Don
Thanks for looking at this car for everyone! My concern is the amount of $$$$ it will take to fix this type of Marcos, and what it will not be worth when it is fixed (given the number issue and the power and body modifications). The next time your in the bay area give me a call, so we could get the cars together.
Thanks

Two days left. Reserve has been met at $10k. Could get
interesting. 23 bids so far.
