Retractable seat belts

Retractable seat belts

2005-10-04 by Hampton Peterson

Hello everyone,
my build sheet from Marcos shows that my car (3M 5463) had retractable
seat belts. I have a rusted remainder (Kangol) but am not sure if the
retracting mechanism mounted at the base or at the head of the seat.
Anyone know for sure before I start looking on eBay?

Hampton,
I also have the Kangol belts and the retraction mechanism is located at the head of the seat.

Hampton, My Marcos also has Kangol retractable seatbelts that has the reel mounted next to the headrest. My car is #5514 so it is about 51 cars newer than yours. I can check out the reel more closely tomorrow and compare it to the Kangol reel in my TR 8 Triumph. I'm located in the Upper Keys which should be about 2 hours away from you (assuming your in Ft. Lauderdale). My Marcos is not yet restored, but I am working on some major components in my spare time. Let me know if you if you need more info. I would klike to hear what stage your car is in and compare notes. - Donny Lang

Thanks Donny,
I've got my car completely disassembled at this point. The body is off
the chassis and I am looking for someone who can plastic media blast
the body to strip the paint (I've just about given up on trying to
chemically strip it). Right now it looks like I may have to take it to
Orlando as there doesn't seem to be anywhere else in south Florida.I
have some rust in the lower frame rails and am going to weld in some
new pieces in the next few weeks. Any help as to the belts is
appreciated. I've found a few Kangol Magnetic belts on eBay but if you
have some pictures of yours it would help.
Let me know if you need any info also.
Cheers,
Hampton

Donny,
If you know where there are any retractors, I could use a pair. Dont need good straps. as I have Piper Aircraft(FOMOCO)1976 3 point lap belts and will use the straps from them.

Hampton and Larry,
I dug into my Marcos and unbolted one of my Kangol belt reels and then compared it to those in my TR8. All they have in common is they are both the same brand and mount in the same reletive location in the respective cars. The Marcos unit is a heavy alloy casting that mounts with a single horizontal bolt at the bottom of the casting. The TR8 reel has a formed steel frame that bolts on with two bolts; one horizontal bolt on the bottom and one vertical bolt at the back of the unit. They both use plastic side caps and the TR8 reel uses a plastic cover over the rolled belt where the Marcos leaves the rolled belt exposed, though the whole unit is covered by the headrest cap. I'll check out some early Jag XJ6s to see what they use. In the meantime, I can take some digital pictures.
I too would like to find someone that can media blast in the Miami/Ft Lauderdale area. I have started to chip away at the paint and don't want to use chemicals because I am afraid of the 'glass absorbing some of the stripper and continuing to "work" years after its repainted. I've had that happen several years ago. I'll probably end of sanding/DAing the paint off if I can't find anyone to media blast it. I might also look into media blasting myself since I already have sand blasting equipment, though I know it is a different process. I too need to replace the outer rocker frame rails that were crudely repaired on my car. Everything else looks sound. I'm going to allow for a rollbar base when the body is off the frame, similar to what Gary Diver did on his. Lets keep in touch! - Donny

Hi Everyone,

I am in the UK but if you hang on for a few days I will get you some info on
bead blasting in South Florida.

Also let me know about any parts you need that I may not have in stock.

Garry,
What Hampson and I are loking for is plastic media blasting which can remove paint from fiberglass with out damage to the bodyshell. I already have a large glass bead cabinet for parts up to the size of a V8 engine block. I have tried soda blasting, but it is not very effecive on the fiberglass the way it is on aluminum body panels. Thanks - Donny

plastic blasting

2005-10-07 by Christian Fey

As I did rebuild my Mantula 2 yrs ago, everybody did tell me that
even the plastic blasting will damage the fiberglas. The only way to
do would be "Ice blasting".

There some articles here in Germany with "Ice blasting" and it seems
that is indeed possible to blast every underground without any attack
to the surface.

I could not find in my region a company to do the job, and did by
hand. Chemical treatment does not make any sense, because the
chemical reaction with the paint is very heavy and you will the work
a second time.

Re: plastic media blasting

2005-10-11 by Hampton Peterson

--- Donny,
I found a source for platic media paint stripping in Orlando, Florida.
The name of the business is "Blast Off". I spoke to them and they tell
me the cost of stripping a Corvette is about $650. Based on my
discription of the Marcos they felt it would be less (maybe $500).
I am planning on taking my body there in the next few weeks when I can
schedule the time. I'll let you know how it turns out (keep your
fingers crossed!).

Hampton,
I addition to "Blast Off", there also is "Master Blaster" in Orlando (407)295-7796. Other media blasters in Florida (that I have found) are Sweeny Inc in New Smyrna Beach (386) 428-8282, and Excell Coatings in Cocoa and Cape Canaveral (321) 868-7968. There is a division of Excell Coatings in the Middle Keys that I use for powder coating services, but they don't do media blasting there. Their quality is superior to any other powder coaster I have used. They have a location at Cape Canaveral where they do work for the space industry, so I expect their quality is better than most, though I haven't used their services. I thought you might want a few more blasters to choose from and compare services, prices, etc. I still can't believe that there aren't any companies providing this service in South Florida. I'll be interested in keeping up with you on your progress. - Donny
