1969 2ltr V4 Clutch Slave Cylinder removal

2009-04-24 by ANDREA CATTON

Hi,
Can anyone help me?
I am trying to remove the clutch slave cylinder from its mounting on the engine as need to strip it down or more than likely replace it.
It's a job i should have done when the engine was not in the car but there you go.
I have removed the external cir clip from the groove nearest the clutch lever.
The hose has also been removed.
I can't see any other fastening and have tried tapping the cylinder in the direction of the radiator but it feels very solid still.
Any tips or info would be much appreciated.
Thanks, Mick

Hi Mick,

I had a great deal of difficulty removing the slave cylinder, in fact I ended up ruining it and replacing it with a new one. I think the alloy reacts with the steel casting of the bell housing and fixes it self well and truly in place! you are right in that there is only a circlip holding it in place, however getting it out afterwards is still tricky!

good luck!
Ash

Yes - you are both right. It's only the circlip that holds the darn thing. I didn't manage to remove it at all while in the car, but since I was going to take the engine and 'box out anyway I left it there. And when I got it out, I tried to use a press and i tried a big hammer. But I was also afraid of cracking the clutch housing. In the end I had to drill it out and smash it...

You can be assured that I used a lot of copper paste when installing the new one that I had to buy.

But there is one thing I didn't try that you should: Heat. Using some sort of blow torch or similar may shift it in the end.

Good luck from Norway
