Marcos in the US

2010-05-03 by Chino Juan

Hello
I might be inheriting a 1969 Mantula. It hasn't ran since 1979 and has sat in a garage ever since. I'd like to know some conatcts on the east coast of the US, or even metro DC area that I could deal with to see HOW LONG and HOW much it is gonna take to put thsi sucker back on the road....
Best Regards!

I've just spent the last three years and 25,000 pounds restoring a wood-chassis 3l V6 to as-new standard and improved spec. Expect time to go down but expense to go up if you pay someone else to do your work

A lot depends on the conditions in the garage. Was it dry all the time? Was the humidity low? Was the car covered up? Was it on blocks? The first thing to check is the condition of the chassis to see if there is any deterioration. It's a big job to repair it if there is major rust damage. Will the engine turn over by hand? After sitting so long, there could be seal deterioration in the engine, brake cylinders and clutch cylinders etc. You should have an expert check the car over first to get an idea about what needs to be done. A full restoration can be very expensive but if the car was carefully stored, the cost may not be too prohibitive at all.

would you know any reputable shops on east coast us or metro washington d.c. area? This car was not covered, garage is cool, but by no means climate controlled, just a side garage on an older home. I think trans is frozen, but engine is not....but I am sure seals are shot. I imagine it will cost BIG $$$ to get back on road. I wouldn't mind having someone look at it or have it towed to a shop to have an analysis done. If this analysis could be broken down into steps, I might be able to figure out a way to set aside money each year and slowly work on it (not me!)---perhaps it might take 10 years to get done. This might sound a little odd, but I am just about to have my first kid, and money is tight. If I could really take my time, I'd like to put in roll cage, modern drive train and brakes, don't care if it is stock. I know this might annoy some Marcos folks, but I am looking for reliability and hanging on to it long term. I thought perhaps I could
spread the expense out so it is not so hard to pay for....I am in no rush.

Sorry, I live in the Toronto area so I have no knowledge of facilities in the US. Maybe one of our US brethren could oblige.

Is your car a steel-chassied or wood bodied model? Either way, I know of a good race/restoration shop in Virginia Beach, Va that is very capable. The shop is Abacus Racing on Baker Road - ask for Chuck. I have had excellent machine work done there, and have seen impressive restorations, as well as daily driver updates done by their shop. I think they can take on less than complete restorations, but the condition of your car will be the primary determination of the extent of work necessary.

I live in chesapeake, Va and own an 85 mantula (steel frame) #8153 I think. I do hear that Abacus is pretty reputable. Would look forward to see the car.
