Re:Mike Rodgers - Tail Lights

Re:Mike Rodgers - Tail Lights

The 1800 volvos used four round Imp rear light units and two round
reflectors. The later cars after this 1500's 1650's 3000's used the
Vauxhall victor FB rear light assemblies, oval shape with slightly
pointed ends. These were used on a Lotus but it was the original Elan
and not the europa. I did read somewhere that these were being
remanufactured , but I think it is only the lenses and not the complete
assy including the chrome surround. These light assemblies are now very
rare and fetch a high premium. My wife traced a pair of these, one new
old stock in a box and one good second hand one from a Vauxhall
specialist here in the UK as a birthday present for me back in march but
including delivery charges they were about 180 GBP. If you have a spare
set do not throw them away whatever you do they are gold dust. The
original chrome toggle switches are available from Rory at marcos
heritage spares but if your ones are the later plastic flat toggle
switches as fitted to the trimmed black dashboards he should be able to
help you source them somewhere here in England.

Great post Lee (I didn't know those round lights were Imp units).

I think the later 3 litres (Volvos, etc) used a Hillman Hunter (dull
Ford Cortina competitor - I know my dad had one!) light cluster. The
car, and the lights, are square (well, rectangular) and
unimaginative :^)

It's possible (I suppose, but it seems unlikely) that the light unit
is the same as used on a Capri.

For the person who mentioned a 'European' Capri specialist, be
careful. There are quite a lot of differences between German Capris
and English ones. Body panels and probably rear lights are pretty
compatible, but engines and possibly other mechanicals were
different. I'm not saying they won't be able to help, but if you talk
to them or visit make sure the part you get really is the same.

Cheers,

Mark
