I heard also that ian mcdonald (the one that wrote "revolution in the head", not our flautist friend) decided he'd had enough of it all just after "the people's music", another fabulous book about music, was published. I'd recommend purchase of both of them to anyone that's ever heard any pop music and wondered what it was all about, which I guess is all of us. I saw smith a few years ago at the sheperds bush empire; I was in the wrong place both literally and figuratively, so I didn't get the full benefit, but many trusted acquaintances demonstrated their love of the guy that night. duncan.
