Elliott Smith

2003-10-22 by kenmerb@aol.com

I just heard some very bad news. Elliott Smith, 34, has just died in
Los Angeles of an apparent suicide.

He was an excellent singer / songwriter who used a Chamberlin on his
recordings (played by Jon Brion?). I caught him on Saturday Night Live once,
complete with Chamberlin. His CD "XO" still gets heavy rotation in my car's CD
player. I know that he had at least a couple of fans on this list.

     He will be missed.

Yes, I was stunned when I read the news today. I've always loved his
music, and he will be sorely missed.

His last album, Figure 8, is my favorite. On one or two tracks there is
what sounds to me more like Mellotron than Chamberlin, although not
credited. A bit grittier than a Chamberlin. Samples perhaps.

Listen to "Everything Means Nothing to Me" and "Can't make a sound".
There's a distinct Mk II style key click at the end of the latter as it
fades out. OTOH, Jon Brion is credited with backup vocals on the album.

aye. 34? bloody hell fire. I heard also that ian mcdonald (the one that wrote
"revolution in the head", not our flautist friend) decided he'd had enough of
it all just after "the people's music", another fabulous book about music,
was published. I'd recommend purchase of both of them to anyone that's ever
heard any pop music and wondered what it was all about, which I guess is all of us.

I saw smith a few years ago at the sheperds bush empire; I was in the wrong
place both literally and figuratively, so I didn't get the full benefit, but
many trusted acquaintances demonstrated their love of the guy that night.

duncan.
