We have our cabinets refinished in 2 pack acid catalyst paint, the sort used 
for kitchen and bathroom cabinets where the enviroment is harsh.  The original 
paint is sanded off, the edges are relipped, a heavy spray filler is used to 
level the surface and that is then sanded to a flat surface and then the acid 
cat. is applied.  We then have a semi matt lacquer applied to avoid lead lines 
from metal objects.
