Snooping around a bit I found this reference in the links section of Don's Mellotron Page (http://www.till.com/articles/Mellotron/), in the description of the www.mellotron.com site: 'Dave Kean's Mellotron paradise. Dave purchased the old Mellotron factory, parts, stock, tapes, trademark, the works. He offers service, replacement parts, tapes, expert advice, Tee-shirts, a CDROM, and has even produced a couple small runs of a new Mark VI Mellotron.' So at least they *used* to sell those things. I wonder if they've still got some in stock. In that case I wouldn't hesitate to buy one. And I'm thinking I'm not the only one.
