I certainly don't intend to sound like I'm beating the hell out of this hard-working group, but while the cut is a noble effort it certainly isn't Yes or anybody I've heard before. The performance is ambitious, but plodding and ham-handed, lacking deftness and finesse. It really sounds like the band has just finished writing the song and is still trying to clumsily make their way through the arrangement together. They obviously have listened to a lot of Yes, but judging by the amount of synth in it (which sounds awfully ARP-Odyssey-ish to my ears) dates it at least post-Fragile era, and apart from Starcastle (which still had too much Styx flavor for me) I can't think of anything that was that overtly "Yessy" at the time. The vocals and the blockiness of the writing makes me think of Flash, but they played a lot better and never got that keyboardy. The recording space sounds really small, too, sounding almost like a good basement tape more than an engineered and large, dedicated-recording-space effort to me. ----- Original Message ----- From: "mellotrongirl" <mellotrongirl@...> To: <Mellotronists@yahoogroups.com> Sent: Sunday, November 07, 2004 4:30 PM Subject: [Mellotronists] Name that tune (w/mp3 link) > > > Here's the direct link.
