In my limited experience, it seems to be just a
matter of using a little sense. I've made about fifty eBay purchases,
amounts up to around $500 at the most, and every one was smooth and the items
were as described. The actual written feedback gives a pretty good insight
into anyone who has a lot of transactions behind them. In Mellotron-land
with prices well over $500, I'd be more nervous, that's getting into a range
where it's tempting for some folks to overlook basic ethics.

PS: I've also had a fair number of instruments come to me for repair from
owners who thought they had got a bargain - but didn't. But to be fair some
sellers are genuine.
