RE: Fw: [Mellotronists] 'Trons on eBay (in general)

2005-06-25 by David Jacques

Big ticket items on Ebay are a gamble. Yes, the seller's feedback is a
good indication. Also a guarantee against a DOA product is always good.

I paid $2000 for my Tron from a private seller in Texas (whom I did not
know). I had the shipping company give the check to the seller when they
came to pick up the tron. I could not be there because I was out of the
country. I was very lucky then.

I would never buy a B3 or other high priced item without personally
going there to pick it up.

In my limited experience, it seems to be just a matter of using a little
sense. I've made about fifty eBay purchases, amounts up to around $500
at the most, and every one was smooth and the items were as described.
The actual written feedback gives a pretty good insight into anyone who
has a lot of transactions behind them. In Mellotron-land with prices
well over $500, I'd be more nervous, that's getting into a range where
it's tempting for some folks to overlook basic ethics.

PS: I've also had a fair number of instruments come to me for repair
from owners who thought they had got a bargain - but didn't. But to be
fair some sellers are genuine.
