'tron recording

'tron recording

2003-01-27 by ceccles_ca <clay123@rogers.com>

In a few places in Frank's Mellotron Book, the double tracking, far
left/far right recording technique is mentioned. I thought that I
would mention a quick method to get a similar effect when recording.
(can also be used in studio monitoring or live).

Record one track in mono (L=R).
Delay one channel approx 1/50 of a second.
Go easy on the reverb.....(somewhat less than the usual load)
(use longer delay time for a more obvious effect)
I've used longer delay times for stereo studio monitoring with great
results.

Has anyone used something like this in a live setting? I did a live
demonstration in front of three friends.... It left them speachless.
(awestruck).

This method will get you a stereo effect, but there is negative side
effect. The undelayed signal will be percieved as louder than the delayed
signal because it gets to your ears first. Someone explained this to me in
tech terms once, so I apologize for the very simple explanation, but it is
true. This method works pretty well though for tracks that don't require
such tight performances
Another method to make your tron stereo without the use of time based
effects is to rerecord your tron through an amp and pan the resulting two
channels hard left and right. Another method involves knowing what you played
and recording a duplicate track with the pitch raised or lowered a slight
amount, and I do mean slight. If you have a DAW, then you should have a slew
of plugins that will help you out as well.
My favorite method is to double a 3violins track with m300 strings. VERY
LUSH.

Methinks Herr Doddy refers to Sir Martinge of Blithbury, Keeper of the
Queen's Mellotron Recordings and Boon Companion of Duke John of Bradley.

What ho!

Rick (having just watched half of Kenneth Branagh's Hamlet this eve --
no mellotrons, perceived wrongly or otherwise)

Friski my love:
I usually trim the volume on the undelayed signal. It is strange,
but even when trimmed 50% it can still be percieved as louder.
I guess we get our direction and volume clues from the sound that
arrives at the ear first.

I will have to try ... "double a 3violins track with m300 strings".

I just put the M300B Violins frame in.... Wow.... What a great
sound that is!!!!

Thanks gorgeous

Isn't the 3 violins doubled with M300 strings Streetly's Classic
Strings sound? Now that is nice; kinda spacy like the 3 violins but
not as harsh as the M300s...lovely!
