My little on/off twisty beacon light flickers, too. Those old red 
Colgate toothpaste caps look pretty close to the lens cover...maybe 
something from a '58 Cadillac model kit from Revell would work--like 
the fin tail lights maybe? At least you'd have three spares.

There's an exact replacement bulb available.  It's an A1A (NE-2) neon lamp.

I don't know about using Cadillac tail lights or toothpaste caps, but 
anything is possible!  :-)

When I bought my 400 it came with a plastic champagne "cork" as the
switch cover from obviously a very cheap bottle. You know, it looks like
a big plastic mushroom with the stem hollowed out. I used it like that
until it came off one day while turning it on and what was living inside
the stem? My pretty well preserved cap! So, cheap champagne corks fit
perfectly over your tired or cracked cap or use it to preserve your
existing cap. Now, if the bulb was bright enough to light the whole
thing up, you might have somethin'.
