Switch Caps

2003-10-28 by Mike Rivers

Hey everybody!
'Spose we all get together and get NEW SWITCH CAPS molded? There's bound to be somebody somwheres with a metal shop, we could get a mold made and send it to an injection molding place. (Just a suggestion, mine's in great shape)
Might not be too expensive - then again, it might.
I think I'll start with a little research that goes a little something like this... ( a-one, and a-two,...and-a [cue strings] )

of the 4 machines i have worked on 3 needed new caps.
[mine was not, thankfully, one of them]
they are surely the single most common item in need of replacement,
second only to... maybe tapes? [a far more costly commodity]

i don't think people would be willing to pay more than... say $5 US for
a replacement cap. but i do think $5 US would be resonable to most folks.
[perhaps $6 US with a shipping fee included]

at that price i would order a spare just to have one around.

could they be made for less than that?

anyone else have a price point they would find reasonable?

what would you consider an UN-reasonable price?
i think $$10 US would just be too hard to justify.

my two cents, or as much as $6.

If Streetly is going to be making new M400 style machines soon, won't they
have these parts available as well? I'm assuming that there will be all sorts
of new replacment parts available for our machines once production starts. Is
this true, Martin, or am I dreaming?

Hmmm....I guess they are made out of "Unobtainium".

Does anyone think that they would ever sell their Mellotron? If not,
then $10 bucks is a drop in the bucket for a replacement cap that could
quite possibly provide a lifetime of service. (now that most of these
machines are better cared for, they probably wont need another) Also, it
would look original and that's what we'd prefer, right?. I'd pay the
$10.

RE: [Mellotronists] Switch Caps

Hi Folks-

Just for kicks, I just got back from a little local search and found
some places that could make the cap but as somewhat expected it will be
expensive- probably $25-$30 each based on a run of 75. (ouch!) This is
just an estimate and bringing in my cap will refine this estimate
however, they seem pretty sure that it will be in this range. They said
that if we could mold from 5 or 6 of them at once, then the price could
come down a bit but not dramatically. He totally understands where I was
coming from and was delighted to see that it was for a Mellotron. (I
brought a picture of the cap which was attached to #917.)
He suggested trying a different part of the country as the San Francisco
bay area has tremendous overhead/operating costs and that it may be
cheaper to be produced elsewhere. Anyone live in Montana? I think Ken
had the right idea of going out of the country all together.

Anyway, that's the Bay Area estimate!

		M'dears,

When our very limited stock of these goes(and they are
all allocated sadly) there will be no more. There is just no budget
available to generate an injection moulding tool for such low quantities
and there isn't the switch mechanism to carry the cap anymore. It's one
little piece of the M400 that will vanish for ever. It's well and truly
obsolete. I'm close to tears...........
