One worth checking out

One worth checking out

2004-02-27 by kinchmusic@aol.com

Re-evaluating my vinyl collection has led to discover an absolute gem - "Epsilon in Malaysian Pale" by Edgar Froese of Tangerine Dream. Anyone here have it? Made in 1975 on Virgin, it's a real find. Apart from minimal synth sequences, virtually all tron, mainly flute and 3 violins, -sublime!
Makes me a relieved man that I didn't sell all my record collection in the name of CD. Which begs a question.. Anyone have any regrets over what albums they sold when the CD bug first took hold? If you do still have some early albums on vinyl you've had stashed away in the garage or loft. Do yourself a favour and get them out and rediscover the experience that we once had and have now sadly lost.
mp3's and hard drives make me seethe.

Hi Andy and gang,

Yep, got my copy on Euro vinyl in the 70's. Avail. on CD too.
There's a smattering of brass on there too.

KL, didn't you perform some of your early musical sequences
based upon that LP ??

The "Kick-Me" award : I sold and gave away my mint-cond.
LP's of Gleenslade,Badger, and Mike Quatro Jam Band.
The latter had their rendition of "Court Of Crimson King"
replete with Mellotron....... (sigh....) Cheers, Jerry K.

mine is on brain/metronome germany. [the older green label IIRC]
people love that or hate it.
i think it was... derided here on the list some time back as
being indulgent noodlings or something like that...
edgar's solo stuff WAS on the indulgent side at times...
personally, i dig that LP :)

i never sold ANY of my vinyl, and a few years back had my
turntable restored to "like new" condition. there are MANY
great albums that have still not been released on CD, and
lots that probably never will... so my 1500+ vinyl collection
will be with me for a looooooooong time to come...
[and my 500+ laserdiscs too... another "relic" i adore...]

EPSILON IN MALAYSIAN PALE is probably my
favourite album by any artist ever!
So it is.

Oh, Froese's "Malaysian Pale"?

Not specifically. I just went for "Generic Tangerine Dream Sounding Dross"
and did it somewhat worse than they did. They may have liked E minor, but
I like G minor and C minor, so I guess you can say I did take it in an
entirely new artistic direction.

Unfortunately "Malaysian Pale" is no longer in print, unless Froese decides
(decided?) to put it back out there again (I haven't checked). Yes, mostly
'tron, really incredible stuff for 'tron lovers. It's 'tron ear candy.

Tangerine Dream as of late has been releasing boots (taking the ones
available on the TD boot tree on the 'net and pressing them). I just got
the 2nd set. Mellotron is always mentioned in the liner notes and is
always present in these older recordings. However most of the boots I got
from other sources are better than what's been presented so far, at least
compared to the 1st boot set they put out. I haven't listed to the 2nd
boot set yet, but I have a long drive this afternoon/evening, so I'm sure I
will get to some of it. The 2nd set is '76 and later, so it should be a
bit more to my liking.

TD don't get on people about trading boots, which is good. But they're
also cashing in a bit, which I don't consider to be a bad thing,
either--fair is fair.

Ah...mellotrons and self indulgence. Now there's two things you rarely hear in the same sentence.
As someone who doesn't have a TD album, what do you guys consider to be the best tron-wise?
Cheers.

Got one, but fed up with quoting the serial number.

Well, it seems my first posting to this list has gone AWOL, or is perhaps taking the scenic route, so here's my attempt at an intro again (apologies for the repeat if the other one shows up):

Greetings to one and all. I'm a non-owner who has been lurking for at least a year without feeling a particular need to contribute, or that I could answer queries better than the experts. Jim Bailey's the name; some of you may remember me from Tronto MkII, but for others or those who want to refresh memories, there's some pictures of me at that event on Ken L's wonderful site. I even get a special section, signing copies of my ('tron-less) 1986 LP for a couple of unsuspecting suckers...er...fans.

Anyway, on to the thread:

I had to pull out my copy of EiMP and have another listen. Not that it has been neglected - I probably listen to it at least once a year - my addled brain cells just needed some refreshing. It is quite lovely in a subdued kind of way, and the sequencer is in a more appropriate support role than was common with Froese/TD in those days.

An observation of a totally un-musical sort that I made shortly after buying my copy new (Virgin pressing) was that there are four lines on the spine that slope down to the left, just above where the title is printed. Now, this may not apply in all cases, but when mine is placed side-by-side with Aqua (Brain pressing), there are four lines that match up almost perfectly, as a continuation. Just one of those things one notices in idle moments.

Jerry: I've still got all those albums you mention. Just the first two Greenslades, though. Bought the Badger simply because I liked the cover; some of the songs are too close to God-rock for me, but it's played well. Saw Mike Quatro a couple of times back in those days, but wasn't really a gear-head back then, so don't remember what he was using. I didn't really like what he did to ItCotKC - missing a verse, words wrong, hell he even screwed up the composer credits! - but there were some great moments.

Alright, let's see if this gets through.
