<< Was it not THAMES Television based at Teddington?.... Or did Thames rise from the ashes of ABC? >> sorta.... thames won the franchise for weekday programming for the south-east ITV service while LWT copped for the friday nights and weekends, at the start of the 70s. thames inherited some of the facilities and infrastructure. prior to that, the ITV franchises resided largely with cinema chains and film studios. thames are still a production company while michael green's carlton hold down their old job; LWT remains (sadly and grimly). the teddington-lock complex itself has changed hands a few times, while the old euston road complex where thames' transmission operation was based is still being redeveloped into something that probably won't rival the prudential building across the way. still, thank heavens TVam fucked off and died or mtv-europe would be homeless. apologies, a) for the french- a long involvement with independent tv in the UK... and b) so many untranslatable references to the idiosyncracies of british commercial tv. at least they bought a few 'trons. wasn't there one at ATV/central in birmingham? duncan.
