Schizoid (non-)Mellotron

Schizoid (non-)Mellotron

2004-05-18 by Dagfinn Hobaek

Hi,

Um, I just caught a live streamed track by the 21st Century Schizoid Band
(former members of KC picking up old habits), and I noticed to my (mild)
horror that these guys, rather than using 'Tron samples (or better still, a
real 'Tron), have replaced the traditional string parts with something like
a modular synth emulation of the 3 violins tapes - and it sounds awful!
Anyone have any explanation for this most erratic and disturbing behaviour?

Regards,

Dagfinn

I went down to Georgia to see my brother. While we were down there, we
caught them live. Some songs sounded good. Some didn't. Even though on
most of the songs (including Starless, Cirkus, Sailor's Tale) they used
decent Mellotron samples, the songs that it really counts (INCOTKC and
Epitaph), they used some sort of 80's string sample. I don't know if
someone's hand dialed in the wrong sound by accident and couldn't get a
proper hear through the monitors; but, the sounds were definitely not even
remotely Tronish. As a result, I'm sorry to say, after flying 400 miles,
the show was a disappointment. Everyone played very well; but, for some
reason (the reason probably being that I was expecting insanely good
Mellotron parts) the parts just did not add up to a whole.

"Cadence and Cascade" and "I Talk To The Wind" were the show highlights for
me.

Yeah, I don't get it. In my case it was a recording of a live
performance of 'Epitaph', and it was quite obvious that they (Ian
McDonald!) had been tweaking some synth string patch to the effect of
producing something reminiscent of the MkII violins on the original KC
recording. Electronically simulated tape wobbles ... why?!

These things bother me.

Cheers,

Dagfinn
