Medeski Martin & Wood drop 'Tron laden gem

Medeski Martin & Wood drop 'Tron laden gem

2004-09-01 by mellotrongirl

Just got the new MM+W album today, titled "End Of The World Party
(Just In Case)" and the first track right off the bat sounds like it
might be an instrumental hip-hop tune (I was waiting forever for the
vocals to kick in), and was loaded with up front Mellotron strings,
flute, cello and was quite the mish mash workout... to sum it up it
reminded me of how the first South album would sound like if Steve
Fisk was in the band. It goes on--twelve lounge-to-funk numbers that
are really quite savvy, retro-cool and unique! I think now Medeski
Martin & Wood have taken over from St. Germain as the Blue Note
label's furthest cry from traditional jazz that put 'em on the map
years and years ago.

I realize I'm replying to a very old email, but I finally heard a clip
of this band today and I think I'm going to have to add it to my list.
Thanks for the review... Quite interesting. It's not often that you
hear a tron in any form of jazz! (digression: when is it no longer
considered "jazz"?) Has anyone in the NY area ever seen these guys?

[If you have iTunes you can hear clips by going to the iTunes Music
Store, search for "Medeski, Martin & Wood." i.e, click on "End of the
World Party (Just In Case)" CD cover, then click on the first track,
"Anonymous Skulls." It's only 0:30 but it's got a little bit of
everything.]

Hi,

I rented my beloved M400 #719 to them during the 2002 Montreal Jazz
Festival. Their own machine wasn't fixed and the organisation opf the
festival called my friend Pierre Veilleux to rent a M400 for that
show. Pierre wasn't able to provide tapes that they want because he
had custom tapes in his machines at the time. So, he called me to ask
if I didn't mind to rent my machine for that evening.
I arrived in the hall during the afternoon and fine tune the machine
for the gig. John Medesky had a lot of keys for that show. With the
usual Hammond B3 and leslie he had a clavinet, an ARP Odyssey, a
Wurlitzer electric piano, a grand piano and the mellotron.

During the first part of the gig, he played the Hammond and he didn't
touch other keys. The second part after the intermission was more
"spacey" and he did a lot of "pitchbend" tron parts (his trademark).
The show was good but I must admit that I am not their greatest fan,
too improvised for my own tastes. Pierre and I talked to John Medesky
after the show and said that he liked my M400 very much and it was
well adjusted. The following year, they make a show at the same venue
but they bring their own machine for that show.

I have exchanged emails with Mr. Medeski of MM&W. John has been a avid
Mellotronist for the last 10 years and loves to create a jazz tron so to speak. I
am looking forward to meeting them as soon as they come close to Phila. Road
trip Ken?

I'd like to hear some of their material. Sounds like a trip to the Amazon
or up into the Tower is in order.

Amazon has some snippets.

Hmmm...I'm reminded why I don't listen to jazz that much:

I don't really understand jazz. Am I supposed to?

...kl...
M400 #805 - i don't understand kl
M400 #1037 - is anyone supposed to?

Yes, Ken,

You are supposed to understand any and all Mellotron shit we run across.
Why? I don't really know. Perhaps Mellotron girl can explain. No matter.Just
sift, that's my advice.

Walloing,
