"Mark" the 'tron

"Mark" the 'tron

Gosh...I didn't realise a number of you have names for your units.
Sure I knew of the Pindertron and a few famous ones, but what kind of
a unique name can you give yr standard stock M-400? Maybe I'll call
mine Vinson Massif cause it's big and white. Or something that
revolves around the little penguin feet. I thought naming things mass
produced like this didn't go much beyond naming Volkswagens.

Grandma had a '52 VW Bug named Gus (short for Gesundheit), and I had a
'64 VW bus named Amon Duul 3. AD3 died of colon cancer in 1976. Also
had a blue '64 Pontiac Bonneville Safari SW tank drubbed Tarkus, and
another car with a dent smack dab in the middle of the front end that
caused the headlights to cross beams before hitting the road. Despite
this, they hit both high and low beam perfectly, so I didn't adjust it
(that one was Cross-Eyed Mary).

When I brought my M-400 home in the back of a pickup camper, I hit
some black ice. I figured if the 'tron wasn't back there over the rear
wheels, I would have lost traction and spun out big time, but then
again--if I hadn't gone out to pick it up, I guess the slippery mishap
wouldn't have happened in the first place.

Why do people say "VW" instead of "Volkswagen?" It takes one extra
syllable to say VW. What a waste of hot air in these energy-conscious
times.

Rumor has it that my 400 was once lost by Bobby Sherman in a divorce,
and Mrs. Sherman used it for a hamper for dirty diapers, hence its
original name; the "Smellotron". I bought it from Dave Kerzner (who
sampled it for some of the Sonic Reality library) and between the two of
us, we did quite a bit of cleanup, hence the new name; the
"Swell-o-tron".

Perhaps you could call yours "Lucky"

A couple of years ago I had three of them in my shop and in my music
(studio? place? room?). Whatever. I was getting them ready for the Anglagard show at
NEARfest. I referred to them at the time as Huey, Dewey, and Louie. I still
think of # 1562 as Louie, but I don't ever say that out load. It was OK when
we were dealing with three machines, as it was easier than calling them by
their respective serial #s. Now sometimes I just refer to it as '"... you m****r
f***ing piece of s**t. But rarely.

I suppose that it's a common tech practice, the
naming of things. I know many engineers who name the
damnedest things. Usually stuff that is mysterious
and quirky.
I, myself, have an Echoplex named Justine, my
multitrack machine goes by Lucinda, a 1920's wax
cylinder recorder that's often referred to as Richard
(or Dick as in Dictaphone) and a 50's Harmony acoustic
that came with the name Poonch scrawled clumsily in
sharpy on the back. Humanization is an odd thing.

Re: [Mellotronists] "Mark" the 'tron

2005-07-28 by Jim Anderson

I had a cat that tried to "mark" my 'tron once. That cat and I didn't get along for awhile. Then I renamed the cat to that of my band and it started getting along with me better and stopped trying to "mark" the 'tron. (good karma, i think)

I'm an engineer but I don't have a name for my 'tron. I have a hard enough time remembering my girlfriend's name during certain times... Imagine if I were to call my 'tron the wrong name during a goose-pimply recording session. (bad karma, i think)

I always liked the quote a friend of mine used to use at the end of
his emails (I don't remember the source):

"HTML in emails is for those people who still consider crayons to be
an indispensible tool in the communication process."
