incoherent light...

2005-11-22 by jonesalley

As one who has worked with lasers for many years, you'd be amazed at what
the general public thinks are lasers - combine a mirror ball and a fog
machine, and people will argue for hours that it is a laser show. Even the
small moving-pattern disco spots that many clubs use are perceived as lasers
by many. Sad how scientifically illiterate the average person is. And,
almost any large laser is water-cooled - they develop a tremendous amount of
heat. We actually had to run hoses from the nearest bathroom into the
planetarium to host an OmniScan (full-dome laser projector) demo a few years
ago.

Scary how smart you're sounding lately. I'm always awed by those who
manipulate light.

Light? I'm awed by those who manipulate electricity. Sorcery, I call it. The work of Beelzebub. I mean, WHY, exactly, do a bunch of particles too small to see zooming along a wire make things work? And why can they kill you? I've had the water analogy explained to me a million times, but I still don't get it. I'm going to go and live in a cave.

The geek dribbles through once in a while, despite my best efforts. Oh, did I mention I have a 4.5 watt HeNe laser? It's great fun from a rooftop at night...
Do that round here and you'll get a 747 land on your roof, or the local constabulary making an unscheduled call. Or both.

i hear ya.

my father [an engineer of many sorts] used to try and explain things to
me. he finally gave up after spending 2 hours trying to explain his
slide rule to me. he wore it in a pouch on his belt the way people
wear a cell phone today.

he was better at doing than he was at teaching.

i inherited the slide rule.
still have it.
still have no idea how he used it.

[yet, i can read stereo instructions and badly translated synth manuals,
and my VCRs only blink "12:00" after a power outage]
