Todd & The New Cars

Todd & The New Cars

2006-01-11 by mellotrongirl

Interesting they came up with the name The New Cars as opposed to The
New Utopia? Two against two...with the drummer from The Tubes being
the tiebreaker if the decision ever came to that. Who has the most
hits versus the most albums? Were The Cars just more popular than Todd
and/or Utopia?

Maybe the members of the Utopia that were the spin off of Amon Duul 2
that did that one LP on United Artists some 30 years ago plan have
plans to reunite.

I see a great marriage between Rundgren and the members of Utopia, The
Cars and The Tubes. I'm not a wordsmith in describing the similarities
between the five of them that will make it click, but I'm sure over a
century's worth of collective talent has got an elpee's worth of toons
for starters worth checking out. A sense of humor, a sense of punchy
songwriting, some precision playing...it's just I'm just a little,
uhm...apprehensive of any band calling themselves "The New (whatever
they used to be in their heyday)". Implies more of a marketing ploy,
at least to me.

If Keith Richards and Mick Jagger teamed upwith Ringo and Sir Paul and
then brought along Nicky Hopkins or Billy Preston as the fifth member...

I would have gone with "The Used Cars" since they all have some miles on
them... one way or the other, I'm looking forward to some hip new cover
songs for the band to choose from. I've had fun on covers by all three
bands in the past, and just hope this isn't some Damn Yankees/Bad English
marketing crap.

With about 40 LP's worth of tunes since 1968 (solo albums, Nazz and
Utopia albums) Rundgren must be just about worn out. (The Worn-Out
Cars!)

In his spare time, when he wasn't on the road, he produced stuff for
Sparks, XTC, Badfinger, Steve Hillage, Hall and Oates, Paul
Butterfield Blues Band, Janis Joplin, The Psychedelic Furs, Jesse
Winchester, Grand Funk, The Pursuit of Happiness, Meat Loaf, Patti
Smith, James Cotton, Rick Derringer, New York Dolls, Lords of the
New Church, Jim Steinman, The Tubes, Tom Robinson Band, Bad
Religion, Cheap Trick, Shaun Cassidy, and others but I'm tired of
typing.

My point is, this guy has too much time on his hands... We gotta get
him......a woman!
P.S.
The Turtle Creek Barn is for sale. A lot of great stuff has been
recorded there. I see a big honkin' Studer A-800 in the barn.

I imagine Todd isn't worn out at all. Utopia drummer Willie Wilcox is
a neighbor and friend of mine and he reports that Todd is as vibrant as
ever. Doing the work inspires one to keep going. After 2300
commercials, several band albums, dozens of independant productions,
five albums worth of solo material and a bunch of shitty movies, I
found enough in the tank to burp out TFOF and I'm more inspired than
ever. As Emile Zola said, "The artist is nothing without the gift, but
the gift is nothing without the work."

We just sold our A-800 with low hours on it for under 5k! Honestly,
unless you have 24 channels of Dolby SR, it's not the best format for
quiet genres. Now 2" 16-track running at 30ips is another
story...there's your beefy format!

Does Willie Wilcox still use his Motorcycle D-Drum kit ? (The
