Crimson sheet music... and 35 notes

Crimson sheet music... and 35 notes

2006-04-19 by J.P.

Greetings Guys and Gals...
Here's something for you Crimson fans:
... On the "Music Notation" page... you will find sheet music for the first 5 Crimson albums... most hand-written... possibly by Fripp himself. I remember that this was posted at Elephant Talk a few years ago... and promptly disappeared a few days later... so check it out NOW, while you can! Also on the same page is Crimson sheet music transcribed by someone else... including a transcription of "Starless". The sheet music is fairly complete... considering the fact that Crimson did so much improvisation in their songs... enjoy!
As for the 35 note question I posted a few days ago... thanks for the comments... I still believe that with the new 'Trons coming out... both analog and digital... increasing the keyboard to a full three octaves, is an improvement I'd love to see. I know... the master tapes only cover 35 notes... but I for one wouldn't mind if the bottom "G" sounds were "stretched" to cover "F#" and "F" below the bottom "G"... if we could get a full 3 octave keyboard out of it.
That's it... Thanks again...

Fripp's handwriting looks nothing like what's on any of these pages;
these are all far too clear. Some of these transcriptions are inaccurate
and quite a few have missing or incorrect sections or lyrics.

Do you have some sort of problem with your '.' key? Your text reads
like William Shatner doing Samuel Beckett in Greek.

Dear All,

35 notes, probably something to do with capstan length... How long a capstan
could you reliably make?

This is a good point although a little intense! MKII capstans were ground
to 3/10ths of a thou. along their entire length. Some achievement in 1964.
The normal commercial tolerance for ground shafts is 1 thou. which would be
audibly diabolical. We hunted high and low to find a supplier who could match
and if needs be, improve on the original tolerance. Any more run out and you
would hear it instantly. M300s can suffer with capstan judder as the extra
long capstan is unsupported in the middle and this allows for deflection and
ringing. They can be an utter bloody nightmare to dampen. You can find out
more in Capstan Monthly, available weekly from any butchers.

Best,

Martin

I just love it! In all sincerity, it is truly a delight and a privilege to be able to unabashedly wallow in this kind of Mellotron-obsessed geekdom with all of you folks. Some of the minutiae are things that it never would have occurred to me to even wonder about and it really makes me appreciate just how cutting-edge the instruments were as well as how hard the technology of the time had to be pushed to make them feasible.

Norm, let's bore 'em rigid with germanium transistors, flip flop circuits
and the cutting edge nature of the SSCU. Jon is ripe for the picking.

Dear All,

Very cutting edge. It seems to me that things have gone backwards since
then. I was an apprentice (old-school, where you make tea for a year before they
let you loose on real things). Nowadays I am being told that you can't make
things to the sort of tolerances that I had made by hand in apprentice school.

When guitar tweaking you often work to similar "impossible" tolerances!

How about the influence that cabinet colour has on the final sound...
