Use of Mellotron in film soundtracks

Use of Mellotron in film soundtracks

2006-05-19 by charel196

here's a brain tester....I recently got a DVDr copy of the documentary
THE DEVIL'S TRIANGLE w/ Crimson's same titled background music(and
Vincent Price narrating). How many of you can name other prominent
appearances of Mellotron in any film/tv scores? ( I recall that THE
LIFE AND TIMES OF GRIZZLY ADAMS film is supposed to use lots of tron
in the score also)

Hi Charles, Yes , you're correct. Lots of cutesy flutes/strings
on "Grizzly Adams" . "Space-1999" second season (1976) also had a
sprinkling of Tron throughout.

Tangerine Dream's use of Tron was quite prominent in the 70's-80's.
Sorcerer,Firestarter, and a few more i cannot recall right now (senior
moment). An of course , Rick Wakeman's "White Rock" .

Next time you listen to Crimson's "Devil's Triangle" , there's
a smattering of MK-II rhythmns, fills in the mix. Moving violin
chords,60's rock, etc. Same effect as if you put a MK-II into a blender.

Hint: Final sequence of "Triangle"was accomplished by rapid glissando
of MK-II flutes up/down the keys. For an ersatz harp effect.

Have a great day out-there,gang. And special thanks to Dave Kean
for your pleasant phone-call here today ! Was like the "old days."

.....Time for the pontoons, raining like the Great Flood again.
Cheers, - Noah and his "MK"

Oh yeah...and I forgot to mention another that may or
may not be on the Album lists out there- 10cc, Sheet
Music. That is a GREAT record and there is quite a bit
of strings and flute on there. I think it's their best
album.

Mark.

I'm surprised that no one in the 50s/60s latched onto the Chamberlin in film music, given
that theremins and Novachords etc. were all the rage in scifi & horror films of the day. One
might think that Harry Chamberlin would have tried to introduce his instrument down in
Hollywood, given the proximity of his home in Upland. Think of all those low budget
producers who might have wanted a big orchestral sound but didn't have the bucks for a
good ensemble.

Seems like this would be some cool information to track in the mellotronist yahoo groups database (although i'm too busy/lazy to do it myself). ;-)

-jima <-- putting Aeon Flux on his list of movies to watch
