I have a question regarding the visible differences I am seeing with profiles for Matte and Lustre papers. In my eternal effort to get better prints, I was seduced by the look of Canson Platine Fibre....with some sort of notion that higher dmax would give more depth to the prints. Logic would suggest that lustre will have a better range...but I am leaning back towards matte paper due to an apparently more lively separation of tones all the way into the deepest shadow just short of pure black. What I am finding is that even after linearization, the shadows are not as well separated when compared with the same test image on matte paper. This is contrary to what I expected. There is a measurable dmax difference of approx 2.30 on the lustre and 1.65 on the matte. After linearization, I would have expected the deep shadow to show a better separation...but what I have is a good profile with separation...but the shadows are compressed when compared to the matte paper. Why is this? If the profile is linearized, I expected the separation to be that much more apparent in lustre paper due to the measurably darker black that is possible. Where this leads me is that ultimately the Matte print has more presence, and apparent range of tone....despite the fact that the dmax is lower. I have adjusted gray_shadow, gray_hightlight and gray_gamma to lighten the shadow and hopefully get more open shadows on the lustre...and have relinearized...with little or no improvement. Why is it apparently more difficult to get open shadows on the lustre paper...even after linearization???? Thanks for any enlightenment on this...
