QTR Beginner questions re curve creation

2012-11-03 by fvanoaks

This is my second round on digital BW printing on an Epson Machine. The first time out I used the 1280 with MIS Ultra Tone variable inks and Paul Roark's curve set and had acceptable success. When that machine died I purchased an Epson 1400 matched with the MIS EB-6 carbon inkset and I'm working my way through the QTR process so that I can learn the curve creation process on my own.

I realize that there is not a lot of tonal variation with EB-6 unless I use Black Only in which case, on the Premier Art - Matte BW-210gsm paper I'm practicing with, I get a distinctly more neutral tone but at the cost of a serious dot pattern in the lighter tones. Once another ink position is added to K, however, it almost doesn't much matter if I use only one other ink or all five. The tonal spread changes a bit in where values lay but no dot pattern in any value.

So much for introductions. I have reached a stage where I have my target curve and am attempting to linearize it. The text in the Guide that I downloaded from the same site as the program instructs to use the 21 step value wedge to find the values that are then plugged into the boxes on the linearization tab. Unfortunately the Guide shows a linear input page with 21 boxes to match the tonal range of the wedge, the tab in my version of QTR has 60 boxes.

As it turns out if I only input 21 values I get an error message and no curve graphic. If I use an interpolated set of values to fill the blank spaces between the measured ones (laying the actual values about one every three boxes) then when I hit Show Curve I see the same set of curves (one for each ink in use) as I see when I only have the ink %'s input on the Ink SetUp tab. I was expecting to see a single blended curve of the individual ones. So on the one hand I don't really know what I'm looking for from the linearization values but on the other they seem to make little difference to the outcome of the curve set that I get without any values on that tab.

Any insights would be appreciated.
