The Epson approach hides the paper transport inaccuracies better on at least several printers I've had. The top & bottom microbanding happens when only one paper transport roller is engaged. So, I often use wider margins top and bottom to avoid the issue. I might add that, outside of image edges that are too close to the top and bottom of the paper, QTR produces smoother prints than the Epson driver in a number of printer-inkset combinations I use that are compatible with both approaches.
