I'm surprised there aren't generic soft proof profiles available. John Cone says that with contemporary printers and the generic curves he generates, it's unusual to have to create custom profiles. I'd be inclined to see how I do with canned profiles before investing in a spectrophotometer. And I assumed that from Cone's comments, he had generic soft proof profiles available.
