A couple of basic questions ...

A couple of basic questions ...

2012-12-31 by paulraphaelson

I'm a QTR newb but a veteran of the old Piezography ICC system. I'm trying to familiarize myself with the new interface and see what's possible with color inks on an Epson 3880 before getting another dedicated piezo setup.

I'm having no luck figuring out how to soft proof anything. I see the occasional reference to profiles for the purpose of soft proofing, but don't see any packaged with QTR or anywhere else.

I've also repeatedly tried to instal the piezo k7 curves for QTR but they don't appear in the curves menu.

Apologies if this is obvious stuff.

Hi Paul,
Are you on Mac or PC?
I'm on Mac and had the same problem a few days ago (QTR profiles not showing in the QTR Gui).
The problem was solved changing the access and sharing parameters of the quad folder:
Go to Library/Printers/QTR/quadtone, there you select your printer from the list and ctrl+click to get to the advanced options drop down menu, select 'get info', at the bottom of new options window, change the access parameters to 'Read+Write'. Then run the install script within QTR again and they should show up.
I can't be of any help regarding the softproofing, as I create my own softproof profiles with a spectrophotometer.

Let me know if it worked.

Sidney

Thanks, Sidney,

I am on a Mac. I looked at the permissions on those folders. They were already enabled for read/write for all users. For good measure I used the command to apply those settings to all enclosed items.

Doesn't seem to have made a difference.

Here's exactly what's happening: I'm clicking Install for both the OEM and K7 inks. In the print dialog, under QTR, I see a list of about 36 curves, all starting with UC. Nothing for K7. And I don't see any profiles available for soft proofing.

Thanks again,
Paul

I have installed K7 inks 2 days ago, thus dedicating my second printer just for that. Prior to run the K7 install script, I un-installed the UC K3 printer, as there is no more use for it.
Why would you run the install script for OEM and K7, if you only have K7 installed?

Softproofing....

I was never aware about any soft-proof profiles within QTR.
The best soft-proof profile is made with your specific computer/printer/paper setup, there can't be a 'canned version'.

Once I have created and tweaked my QTR profile, I create my soft-proof profile with the help of a spectrophotometer.

I'm surprised there aren't generic soft proof profiles available. John Cone says that with contemporary printers and the generic curves he generates, it's unusual to have to create custom profiles.

I'd be inclined to see how I do with canned profiles before investing in a spectrophotometer.

And I assumed that from Cone's comments, he had generic soft proof profiles available. I don't see them as downloads on the inkjetmall site so I assumed they were included with QTR.

Paul,

Piezography Soft Proof ICC were only distributed with the initial release of Piezography Special Edition for the EPSON 1400. We did not produce them for all the other printer models and inks and papers. But, they are very easy to produce yourself using QTR Create ICC.

To understand how to install the K7 curves - please refer to The NEW Piezography Manual which has been published here:

Look in the articles section for Product Manuals.

Hi Jon,

thanks for writing. I have this manual; I don't see any mention of soft proofing anywhere inside. Am I missing something obvious?

Hi Paul,

There are no built-in soft-proofing profiles. People can make them
for their personal setup.

Frankly I wouldn't put too much importance on custom soft-proofs.
You'll get used to the color tone of your prints very soon and know
what to expect.
