Re: [QuadtoneRIP] Re: Epson 1400 profiles

Chip,
I am in a similar spot. I bought the Epson 1400 to be able to print B&W from
my own scan of B&W negatives which I shoot. I thought the 1400 a much more
reasonably priced than the printers which advertise B&W as a speciality. I
too see either a horrid green or red cast when I print grey scale images. I
had a profile made. If helped very little. I did try the Eboni inks a while
back and they just dried up in the printer.
I found a way to clean and flush out the black and gray Eboni inks.
On a whim I installed the QTR rip last week and produced a very nice, very
neutral print (I used to print in a darkroom (real old school) and that is
the kind of neutral image I was looking for.)
I have not had much time to push it, so I can't tell you exactly what I did,
but the results are what I was looking for with the standard 6 color Epson
inks.
I do this for myself as a hobby, and was considering spending $$$ on one of
the higher end Epsons or Canons, after my disappointment with the 1400. Now
I will use the money I didn't spend on a fancy printer for film and $$ Epson
Ink.
There is hope!
I almost get the feeling (and this is speculation) that Epson "dumbs down"
the cheaper printers to NOT be able to print neutral B&W images. The
printing resolution of the higher end printers is not that much greater
you need a magnifier to see the difference. It is not quite the same as a
print from traditional silver processes, but the cheap 1400 and the cheap
QTR rip are nearly there.
Best of luck.
