The QTR download includes a PDF User Guide. Start there. I have written about some aspects of QTR in the PDFs I prepare for inksets that I have put together, but the exact steps you take will depend on the inkset you are using. Probably the most compete section I have written dealing with using QTR is contained at pages 11 - 17 of http://www.paulroark.com/BW-Info/Eboni-4-Plus.pdf, but that PDF deals with a different inkset than you will be using. You need to tell people what inkset you are using before people can make specific suggestions. It seams like someone has hijacked my question and taken my question off into an area I was not asking about.I am using the standard epson ink set marked t0796.I buy it on ebay.I hope this helps with the answer to my question.thanks for any help you can provide.I am sick of the cold toned prints my printer enjoys spitting out at me. --- In QuadtoneRIP@yahoogroups.com, Paul Roark wrote:

The reason the question was asked is because the usual use of QTR is for managing the printing of monochrome images using inksets with multiple shades of grey. The 1400 only has a single black ink, and no greys in the standard epson inkset, and so would not normally be used with QTR and the standard Epson inks. The profiles provided are for specific monochrome inksets that people have used in the R1400 printer. (Most profiles are provided by users.) If you wish to use the Epson inks and so still be able to print in colour, QTR may not be the best solution. Do you have any print profiling tools? this is a new world to me.I have tried making Black & White images with my 1400 and they have a blue tint to it.I do not know much about profiles or profile tools.i had hoped to get better prints and someone sent me off in this direction. Is this a dead end?Is there a better way of printing & What would that be?I want to use my printer for color[It is outstanding on this task]& Black & white.Would the QTR force me to only use my printer for B&W work?Sorry if I am not fluent in this subject.Just a 57 year old retired telephone repairmen looking for guidance .Thanks for any help you can provide! --- In QuadtoneRIP@yahoogroups.com, Mike Finley wrote:

Chip, I am in a similar spot. I bought the Epson 1400 to be able to print B&W from my own scan of B&W negatives which I shoot. I thought the 1400 a much more reasonably priced than the printers which advertise B&W as a speciality. I too see either a horrid green or red cast when I print grey scale images. I had a profile made. If helped very little. I did try the Eboni inks a while back and they just dried up in the printer. I found a way to clean and flush out the black and gray Eboni inks. On a whim I installed the QTR rip last week and produced a very nice, very neutral print (I used to print in a darkroom (real old school) and that is the kind of neutral image I was looking for.) I have not had much time to push it, so I can't tell you exactly what I did, but the results are what I was looking for with the standard 6 color Epson inks. I do this for myself as a hobby, and was considering spending $$$ on one of the higher end Epsons or Canons, after my disappointment with the 1400. Now I will use the money I didn't spend on a fancy printer for film and $$ Epson Ink. There is hope! I almost get the feeling (and this is speculation) that Epson "dumbs down" the cheaper printers to NOT be able to print neutral B&W images. The printing resolution of the higher end printers is not that much greater you need a magnifier to see the difference. It is not quite the same as a print from traditional silver processes, but the cheap 1400 and the cheap QTR rip are nearly there. Best of luck. Tom Langton

The PDF links to a Zip file with profiles. "Claria-BO-RR-ArcPolSat-HalfColor" is the name of one that uses the color inks for half of the grays and black for the other half. This compromise between color and black only is smooth enough for most images. The color constancy and metamerism are acceptable for most uses if a really good carbon pigment based B&W image is nearby to compare to.
