have you read Tom Moore's guide to using QTR on the PC at 
http://www.quadtonerip.com/User%20Guide.pdf ?
Its a bit dated (!) but does cover using qidf files to create the curve 
files qtr actually uses. Also covered at 
http://www.luminous-landscape.com/tutorials/qtr.shtml

qidf files are not directly usable, you have to convert them using the 
curve creator
