On the R2400 the nozzle check shows a pattern of short thin lines, and misalignment shows by one of the lines being out of position. I think some of the Epson printers have different nozzle check patterns that use small blocks rather than lines, than could mask this problem. Problems at the start and end of the page can also be a symptom of this (at least on the R2400), but can also have other causes. (I no longer use the 2400, so this is from memory.)
