QTRip Prints too dark (in shadows and mid tones) Epson 3880 and PhotoRag Baryta

2013-05-13 by beardie_dragon

Hi,

Running WIndows and latest version of QTRip with Epson 3880
Have a color profiled and calibrated monitor and generaly getting good match with color images using icc profiles through photoshop

Paper is Hahnemule Photo Rag Baryta so chose the provided neutral curve. Am using the PK ink.

However I printed a B&W image that printed out significantly darker than on screen.

Printing the B&W image straight through photoshop does give a reasonable match (but the blacks arent marvelous - the reason to try QTRip)

A quick try of Epson ABW gave a similar output to QTRip, i.e. darker than on screen, but a bit lighter than QTRip and more neutral.

Questions

1. Any specific settings for the tif image file I print in QTRip (sRGB, Grayscale, Gamma)

2. Any way of creating a icc profile for softproofing in Photoshop ? I tried the QTR_RGB_Photo_Paper profile but that doesnt seem to simulate the print I am getting. Do I need to print wedges and measure etc or can I generate an icc profile

3. Should I need to linearize the curve provided with QTRip (UCpk-PRBaryta-neut-2880)

4. Is there a simple tutorial for windows users that takes me step by step through this profile (The Tom Moore guide doesnt have enough screen grabs and I am uncertain if i am missing some critical setps).

I am using a lot of paper and ink and need to try and follow are more controlled set of instructions

TIA
