When I had an R2400 I sometimes had the banding problem, and if you watch the page being printed by QTR and the Epson driver there is a clear difference in the way the ink is laid down in the first part of the page. It didn't always cause a problem but if it was causing a problem and I needed a print there and then I'd switch to the Epson driver in ABW mode. I couldn't find any logic to when it did or didn't happen.
I've not seen the problem with the 3880, so far.

Banding at top and bottom of a page is a different issue. There are a couple reasons.

First the weaving must be different here because of gripping the paper. Epson's pattern is better than Gutenprint's.
On small printers this is all done in the driver but on pro printers it's done in the printer itself.
Second the number of inks can make a difference. Most of the Epson modes will be using more inks.
This is what gives color casts for B&W prints. QTR's feature is to use mostly just gray inks so
many set ups will be using fewer inks.
