Hi Caroline,

Glad to be of help. If this is your first foray into QTR, start simple. The QTR Workflow article by Amadou Diallo that you can download from the QTR website is an excellent guide. Be aware that due to changes in how different versions of OSX and Photoshop handle color management and the options available, you may need the QTR Print Tool. I use an older G5 running 10.5 (leopard) and Ps CS3 in order to avoid those issues.

About the Piezography inks, for their intended purpose which is black & white (grayscale) printing, I do feel they are better, but not without a few caveats. I have been using the K7 Carbon inkset in a 7600 for several years now and have been very happy with the results. (Unfortunately the printer itself is over 10 years old and has become cranky in its old age.)

As for the caveats, firstly you must have a printer dedicated to the inkset. If you print color work too, this means having 2 or more printers.

Secondly, you will have to choose one of the available K7 options: neutral, selenium, warm-neutral, carbon, or special edition. You will not be able to blend curves (profiles) the way you can do using the UC inks in order to achieve a range of tints. Different papers, however, may produce slightly different results with a given K7 inkset. For example, I get a slightly warmer print on Canson Rag Photographique than on Hahnemuhle Photo Rag or Moab Entrada Natural.

Thirdly, the Piezography system, while utilizing QTR to drive the printer, uses proprietary profiles, and thus is something of a black box. The profiles are not customizable by the user. They are, however, extremely good in my experience. If you use papers other than those for which profiles already exist for your inkset and printer, you may need to have Dana (at InkJetMall) make a custom profile for you. Of course there is nothing to prevent a user from creating their own QTR profiles to use with Piezography inks, but I suspect that the proprietary profiling system is what really makes the whole Piezography system sing.

Sorry for being so long-winded!

Cheers,
Keith

Thank you that was absolutely right !!

Are Piezography inks better?

I live in Singapore and there is not much choice here.
