Mike,
thanks very much for the help. OK so in say a 4 cartridge printer QTR expects 1 black cartridge and 3 shades of grey.
My guess is these grey inks are actually made of either grey dye/pigment or a blend of black/white dye/pigment, so that each shade of grey can be printed with full saturation and no halftoning (just been on Wikipedia studying CMYK, etc).
So to get a full saturation print (no halftoning) from a particular "grey" cartridge, I'm guessing I have to find the shade of grey in my software that QTR thinks is an exact match for the "grey" cartridge in use. If my TIFF file had a lighter shade of grey would QTR use halftoning in an attempt to print that lighter shade of grey. It's important I get no halftoning which could allow UV light to pass between the dots so to speak.
By the same token, if my TIFF was solid black would QTR print using full saturation from the only "grey" cartridge available in an attempt to make the image as dark as possible. That would certainly simplify things for me.
Hi Elliot,
thanks for your kind offer of the refillable cartridges. I can't use them but I'm sure someone could. Is it not worth putting them on Ebay if no-one grabs them. The postage would probably be a killer for me in any case, I live in Melbourne, Australia. I've got a CISS for one of my printers but for the small amount of ink I will use I'll probably swap to refillable cartridges, they look great.
