Using a colour cartridge to print black.

Using a colour cartridge to print black.

2013-12-28 by <beefyzee@...>

OK, you're probably wondering what am I on about. I've managed to get hold of a couple of used R210 printers but as usual they'd been stored and have blocked print heads. I'm still attempting to unblock them.

I need just one colour: BLACK, and of course that is the nozzle set that has a blockage. I also need 100% ink output (if the paper will handle it without flooding) and 100% ink coverage where the image will be (the print needs to be opaque to UV light).

So my idea was to fill one of the colour cartridges with black ink and make my TIFF image a colour that would make QTR use only that cartridge. However, I'm a bit stuck as to what precise colour I would choose in my graphics software when I want QTR to print only from one of the other cartridges. I have Corel Photopaint X5 and the old Adobe Photoshop 6.

I'm a beginner to QTR so please correct me if I have the following wrong. I fill one of the colour cartridges with black ink. In QTR I disable all other cartridges. I must now make my TIFF an exact colour that QTR thinks that cartridge will be printing so it will fire that cartridge to give 100% coverage. Can I achieve this using R,G,B colour settings to precisely match either M, LM, C, LC, or Y colours.

Hope I have explained that clearly.

Cheers,

Keith.

That's not the way QTR works. It assumes the file its printing is
greyscale anyway - control of which inks are used is through the QTR
curves. Its a long time since I last created curves, so can't remember
the details, and it'll vary between operating systems anyway. In essence
you probably need a curve that gives 0 ink output for all but the
cartridge you want to use, and 0-100% for the cartridge you want to use
(a straight line should do!) and then find which level of grey you need
to use to get the opacity you want without too much ink spread.

If you tell us the operating system you are using, someone should be
able to give you more detailed instructions, if you need them. There are
significant differences between Mac and Windows, and between old and
recent versions of the Mac OS.

hope that helps ...

As a new member I am not certain about the policies concerning how one goes
about offering items relating to Piezography that one does not need.
However, assuming that I am within the guidelines: I have a new and
completely unused set of refillable cartridges ( the label on the box reads
"CIS Epson 2200"). Included are funnels, instructions, and apparently
everything necessary to use the equipment for Piezography. The items were
given to me by one who moved on to an Epson 3000 and thought the items might
be usable on the 2880. They are not.

So, for the cost of postage you can have the entire kit. Other than
postage, no charge. If someone can use them please let me know. Otherwise
into the trash..hate to do it..

Mike,

thanks very much for the help. OK so in say a 4 cartridge printer QTR expects 1 black cartridge and 3 shades of grey.

My guess is these grey inks are actually made of either grey dye/pigment or a blend of black/white dye/pigment, so that each shade of grey can be printed with full saturation and no halftoning (just been on Wikipedia studying CMYK, etc).

So to get a full saturation print (no halftoning) from a particular "grey" cartridge, I'm guessing I have to find the shade of grey in my software that QTR thinks is an exact match for the "grey" cartridge in use. If my TIFF file had a lighter shade of grey would QTR use halftoning in an attempt to print that lighter shade of grey. It's important I get no halftoning which could allow UV light to pass between the dots so to speak.

By the same token, if my TIFF was solid black would QTR print using full saturation from the only "grey" cartridge available in an attempt to make the image as dark as possible. That would certainly simplify things for me.

Hi Elliot,

thanks for your kind offer of the refillable cartridges. I can't use them but I'm sure someone could. Is it not worth putting them on Ebay if no-one grabs them. The postage would probably be a killer for me in any case, I live in Melbourne, Australia. I've got a CISS for one of my printers but for the small amount of ink I will use I'll probably swap to refillable cartridges, they look great.

If you want to use just one black ink check out the curves in 1400-MIS for
the BO (black only) curves. Just change the K to any other ink.

Think I finally cracked it.

Using QuadR800 driver & my non-supported office printer (Epson TX810FW) and using my existing BLACK tiff image, I first tried the magenta cartridge with all others not used, but that didn't work.

Tried selecting the yellow cartridge only and that worked. Started with ink density at 100% but the lowest resolution, and increasing the resolution each time. Went from a light solid yellow print to a much much darker yellow print with the ink "blotting" on the paper.

Time to put my supported R210 printers back online and test them.

Thanks again everyone.

Keith.
