Walker (or Dana) is in a much better position to answer this, I know, but I wanted to share what I heard about these piezoelectric elements.
If I understand it correctly, when electricity is applied to these elements, they cause a micromovement that propels ink through the nozzle. During a head clean, this piezoelectric element is vibrated at a much greater rate creating a significant amount of heat. As long as this frees up a clog, ink can flow which has a cooling effect on the element. That, I understand, is the reason Epson doesn't recommend more than a couple of head cleans. (I don't knwo what a power clean does, specifically.) Printing oen colour to will cause the element to vibrate also, but not as much as the cleaning mode, so it won't be as damaging. But heat is still produced by the actions of the piezoelement, and if there's air in there, air has a much lower cooling effect than flowing ink.
Obviously Walker and Dana have much more knowledge in this matter, and perhaps I should have waited for Walker to answer. Unfortunately, one of the problems of having the flu is that I'm sitting around bored looking for things to do.

Notwithstanding the text in red, not every nozzle
gap is a clog. It can be air, especially on desktop
printers (noting that the OP has a 9900), and I have found
purge patterns to be a more effective way of dealing with
air. In such situations I have often found head cleans to
make matters worse. If it is a genuine clog, then sooner
or later a head clean will probably be required.
Do you have a reference or
source for the comment that printing with a single missing
nozzle? It's never happened here. In fact on the IJM
forum, the comment has often been made that a single missing
nozzle generally won't been seen in a print, so print
away and the nozzle may clear itself. Which is certainly
my experience.

a reminder from the link below:
This is not the recommended procedure for trying
to unclog a printer.
Also, you don’t
want to print a purge sheet if a single nozzle is out. It
could permanently damage that nozzle.
