Re: [QuadtoneRIP] New user, trouble installing preset curves

2016-05-08 by brian_downunda@...

Like Dr Seuss, Thing #3 is not something that I'd refer to myself so I don't have a view. Other than that the subtlety of Curve vs curve would be lost on many, and esp new users.

My point was simpler. I have often seen new users coming to B&W printing from colour, and reading of QTR curves referred to as profiles and them being confused, esp about workflow. Experienced users can usually tell what's what from the context, but not everyone can. QTR curves don't really have an exact equivalent in normal colour printing, and so to refer to them as profiles doesn't help the transition. That's my only point really, rather than trying to distinguish between different types of "curves". I'll leave that to others.

I see a couple of responses from you to Calvin and in the end he was happy

There is definitely a terminology problem, which I think comes down to trying to use 2 words to identify 3 things:
1. icc profiles
2. QTR curves, which are really much more than curves which is why I prefer to call them profiles
3. an actual curve within a QTR profile such as a Gray Curve (which is either a set of input/output number pairs or a link to a Ps acv file), which is what I mean when I use the term curve

Unfortunately, the QTR interface uses the term Curve where something else might have been more appropriate. You get used to it after a while and realize that the term is used in 2 different ways. Maybe, at least in writing, we could use “Curve" (capital C) for the larger sense, and “curve” (small c) for the smaller sense.
Does that make any sense?

PS - BTW, this is a thread from last summer, and I see I never responded to Calvin’s last post. Nor did anyone else. Are you still there Calvin?
