New user, trouble installing preset curves

2015-07-06 by ckchen_72@...

Hello!!!!

I have just tried to install quadtone rip and the print tool. I am using a mac , 10.9. With an Epson 3880. I think I installed both properly. I then clicked on the folder to install some of the preset curves for the 3880, but when I go to try and print using either photoshop or print tool, I can't seem to find the profiles. All that comes up for quadtone I think is gray matte and glossy. any help??

Also I plan to try and use Epson exhibition fiber, and read somewhere maybe use the preset for silver rag. Any experience doing this? any where to download this specific profile?

Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Calvin,

You say you “clicked on the folder …”. Did you also run the installation file named Install3880.command?

Where are you looking for the curves? They are not the same as icc profiles and do not appear in the Printer Profile list under Color Management. Rather, click on Print Settings then select QuadToneRIP in the dropdown menu below Paper Size. You should then see fields for selecting up to 3 curves. This is where the QTR curves (profiles) are listed.

I can’t speak from experience regarding your particular paper choice since I don’t use either, but it is often possible to get excellent results using one of the supplied profiles for a similar paper. Even if they are not perfect they will be a good starting point for creating custom profiles.

BTW - the terms profile and curve are synonymous in QTR.

Regards,
Keith

Thanks for the reply! Ok will try that tonight. Yes I opened up the 3880 folder and clicked on the install curve app. For the 3 curves option, I remember seeing that, do you only pick one of the curves? also not sure what the abbreviation for some of the papers... prbaryta? Will have to recheck tonight
Thanks!!!Calvin

Hi Calvin,

When you ran the Install3880.command file did it open a window in Terminal and run through a bunch of instructions? If so, then you should be good to go. If not, then something is wrong.

Assuming the installation is complete, you should see sets of 4 profiles to produce cool, neutral, warm, and sepia tones for a variety of papers on the Curve dropdown lists. Keep things simple to start with and just use one curve. Multiple curves can be used to produce intermediate tones (e.g. if sepia is too warm and warm not warm enough you can use both and adjust the ratio to get what you like.) Multiple curves can also be used to produce split-tone effects. There are many possibilities.

Regarding papers, I think prbaryta is Hahnemuhle Photo Rag Baryta. There might be a list of abbreviations in Roy’s Tutorial. If not, just ask here - someone will know.

If you haven’t read it yet, I highly recommend Amadou Diallo’s QTR Workflow article available in pdf format on the QTR download page.

My personal feeling is that many new users make QTR much more complicated than necessary by thinking they have to make custom profiles right from the beginning. Learn to use the included profiles first, then move on to custom profiles if you need them. I currently print with a 3800 and only use matte papers such as Moab Entrada Natural and several of the Canson art papers. There is now a profile for the Entrada, but there wasn’t when I began using it, so I used the HPR profile with excellent results. I now use the HPR profile with Canson Rag Photo and BFK Rives and don’t feel the need to customize them.

I do make custom profiles for producing digital negatives for contact printing in the darkroom using Platinum/Palladium and other historical processes, but that’s a whole other can-of-worms.

Let us know if the profiles are there in the Curve fields and good luck with your printing.

Oh, and do use Print Tool since you are on a Mac with OSX more recent than 10.5.

Cheers,
Keith

thanks so much! Yes you were right about the curves. Just wanted to verify, do you have to covert to greyscale? Gamma is 2.2 correct? The HPR profile is for hahnemuhle photo rag> How do you like the Canson Rag photo, and bfk rives? Printing for a small gallery show... poetic street photography in the Amazon ( I know a little oxymoron). After making 1-2 test prints not seeing a whole lot of difference in qtr vs regular printing maybe a little more warmer
Thanks for all the advice!!!!!!!!

Re: New user, trouble installing preset curves

Hello, i am a new user to QTR using OSX10.8 and PS CS6.

1. I have installed the QTR printer and added it in the printer preferences pane.
2. It shows up in PS print menu.
3. On the main PS dialogue box under "printer profile" all i can choose is:
a. QTR_RGB_lab
b. QTR_RGB_matte paper
c. QTR_RGB_photo paper
Is this correct?
4. When i enter the Print Settings dialogue box and navigate to QuadToneRip i see the three curves drop down menu but there are no options under each. ??
5. I believe i installed correctly. Navigated to the Applications/QuadToneRip/Profiles/7600-9600UC/Intall9600.command which prompted a Terminal window installing the profiles.

Any help would be appreciated.

You need to use Print Tool to print from a Mac these days. You can search the forum for excruciating detail as to why, but the bottom line is that Print Tool is your friend. It also happens to be a very handy utility for other than QTR printing.

I don't wish to be one of those totally retentive pedants, but I think that some precision in the use of terminology would minimise confusion. I prefer to use the work "curve" for QTR's .quad/.qifd (.txt on a Mac) files and the word "profile" for an ICC file. Otherwise the word "profile" is used for both and confusion ensues. Keith used the term "ICC profiles" to make the distinction, but the problem with this is that it's all too easy for the "ICC" part to get dropped.

I agree with this statement made by Keith in a later post: "My personal feeling is that many new users make QTR much more complicated than necessary by thinking they have to make custom profiles right from the beginning. Learn to use the included profiles first, then move on to custom profiles if you need them. "

There is definitely a terminology problem, which I think comes down to trying to use 2 words to identify 3 things:
1. icc profiles
2. QTR curves, which are really much more than curves which is why I prefer to call them profiles
3. an actual curve within a QTR profile such as a Gray Curve (which is either a set of input/output number pairs or a link to a Ps acv file), which is what I mean when I use the term curve

Unfortunately, the QTR interface uses the term Curve where something else might have been more appropriate. You get used to it after a while and realize that the term is used in 2 different ways. Maybe, at least in writing, we could use “Curve" (capital C) for the larger sense, and “curve” (small c) for the smaller sense.
Does that make any sense?

Keith

Re: [QuadtoneRIP] New user, trouble installing preset curves

Like Dr Seuss, Thing #3 is not something that I'd refer to myself so I don't have a view. Other than that the subtlety of Curve vs curve would be lost on many, and esp new users.

My point was simpler. I have often seen new users coming to B&W printing from colour, and reading of QTR curves referred to as profiles and them being confused, esp about workflow. Experienced users can usually tell what's what from the context, but not everyone can. QTR curves don't really have an exact equivalent in normal colour printing, and so to refer to them as profiles doesn't help the transition. That's my only point really, rather than trying to distinguish between different types of "curves". I'll leave that to others.

I see a couple of responses from you to Calvin and in the end he was happy
